It is very difficult to get an exact number of how many people receives scholarship money because there are so many different sources for grants and scholarships for college students. It is safe to say that A LOT of students receive some form of scholarship money. Just one such example is the Pell Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The U.S. Department of Education estimates that in 2010 that "$36.5 billion in Pell Grant money was paid to approximately 8.9 million undergraduate students in fiscal year (FY) 2010/2011." However, this does NOT mean that all 8.9 million students received the maximum $5,500 that students are able to receive IF they qualify for the full amount. In fact, it is highly likely that a majority received some Pell Grant money, but not the maximum amount possible.

Following is a link may provide information about a variety of resources that can be found in a library or on the World Wide Web that can help you find scholarships that you may qualify for.

Scholarships vary greatly in terms of how much money they pay out. There are many options, you should check out those that are appropriate to you. For example, there is a great international student scholarship available from University Language Services that pays $500 to the grand prize winner of a study abroad/international student photo contest. Check it out!

Most people start hunting for scholarships around 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in high school. But there are still scholarships offered to college students and graduate students.

When you should apply for individual scholarships depends on the deadline for that scholarship. Look at the site listed below under related links. You can sign up for an account and search the scholarship list. All scholarships have different deadlines.
