All depends on the switch if the switch is intelligent and have auto detection which most switches have now a days you can use either one i.e straight through or crossover but if the switch is dumb you have to use crossover cable and plug it in the up-link port the process is called daisy chaining.
For the past 7 years i have yet to come across a switch that don't have auto-detection for cables and link but in some old setups i have still see old technology.
To connect a PC to a switch you should use a straight through UTP cable.
we use straight cable to connect between the router and switch as router and switch are different devices.
Crossover
A crossover cable.
You need a crossover cable for that.
cross over cable
Is a crossover cable needed to connect Host computers to the switch? Why or why not?
To connect two devices of the same type together. e.g. You would use a crossover cable to connect a router to another router, a switch to another switch or a computer to another computer. If you are connecting diferent devices together, such as a router to a switch, a straight through cable should be used.
crossover cable
You can connect 2 PC`s without the use of a switch with a cross-over cable.
Either use a crossover cable or connect them using a hub, switch, or router.
