To be unemployed an individual has to be looking for work but not employed. There are three kinds of unemployment: frictional, structural, and cyclical. Frictional unemployment is when an individual has recently entered the labor market and is looking for a job. Examples of this could be an individual who recently graduated from school, or a homemaker who recently decided to participate in the labor market. Structural unemployment is when changes in the economy cause the demand for certain skills to decrease or for certain skills to no longer to applicable in the labor market. This implies for the population with those skills have to learn new skills to be able to participate in the labor market. An example of this was the operator of a telephone switchboard; the operator had to retrain because new advances in technology made it so that a person no longer needed to operate the switchboard. Cyclical unemployment is when there is deficient demand in a good or service and the firm must fire employees to not lose money. The example of the clerk is an example of cyclical unemployment.
