The British were moving to seize weapons and ammunition that belonged to the colonists as part of the traditional right to keep and bear arms as free British subjects. The colonists took a stand to defend their rights.
The men were trying to stop the British. The British troops came into their town/on their green and they felt "invaded" yet for the British it was the Kings green. The king saw the colonies as his, so the people, towns, and places were his. A good movie to watch is April Morning based on the book April Morning. Hallmark hall of fame had it as a TV movie and the scenes of the British marching into Lexington gives a real feel what it may have been like. The sounds of the marching men, the drums, officers shouting orders, the sounds of the horses, and the lines of men in red wool uniforms.

British and American soldiers exchanged fire in the Massachusetts towns of lexington and concord
It was the Battle of Lexington and Concord.
The battles of Lexington and Concord were important because they were the first battles of the Revolutionary War. Lexington was not a full-fledged battle, but only a skirmish. An advance guard of six companies of the British Regular Army entered the town at sunrise on April 19, 1775. About 80 Lexington militiamen under the leadership of Captain John Parker stood in ranks on the village common. No one is sure who fired the first shot. Eight Massachusetts men were killed and ten were wounded. None of the British soldiers was killed and only one was wounded. Colonel James Barrett led the militia in the town of Concord. He first marched toward the British, but when he saw the colonials were outnumbered almost three to one, he wisely withdrew to a hillside outside of town, expecting that he would receive reinforcements as the day progressed. Militiamen from many nearby villages arrived until the colonials had a force of about 2,000. They routed the first group of British troops, who retreated down the road heading back to Boston. The militia continued to shoot at them along the way.
The Battles of Lexington and Concord were fought between British forces consisting of British Army, British Marines and Royal Artillery and Colonial American "Minutemen" formally known as the Militia of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

After Lexington, the British went to Concord, Massachusetts.
The first "nonauthorized conflict" of the Revolutionary War was on April 19, 1775, when 70 Massachusetts militiamen stood on Lexington Green facing the British advance guard. The famous unauthorized "shot heard 'round the world" rings out, and the American Revolution begins.
New England militiamen-who later became part of the Continental Army-surrounded the town of Boston, Massachusetts, to prevent movement by the British Army garrisoned within. So the americans tried to fight them off.

The battle of Lexington was on Lexington Green, Massachusetts on April 19th 1775 between the rebels and the government forces. British won.
At dawn on April 19, some 700 British troops arrived in Lexington and came upon 77 militiamen gathered on the town green. A British major yelled, "Throw down your arms! Ye villains, ye rebels." The heavily outnumbered militiamen had just been ordered by their commander to disperse when a shot rang out. To this day, no one knows which side fired first. Several British volleys were subsequently unleashed before order could be restored. When the smoke cleared, eight militiamen lay dead and nine were wounded, while only one Redcoat was injured.
