His real reason was to raise the spirits of a war-weary electorate to continue the long struggle, to change the reason for the war from the preservation of the union to the expansion of freedom to another race and class of citizens.

Another speaker named Edward Evert was supposed to the main speaker and was thought to be the best speaker in the USA in 1863. Mr. Evert spoke for 2 hours and almost nobody remembers what he said. President Lincoln spoke for 2 minutes and said one of the most famous, well known, beloved speeches in the history of the human race.
