Black people were part of the original people who came to the colonies. They came as free people and some owned land. The slave trade, which grew during the 1800's, brought many more blacks who had been captured as slaves in their native lands.
The first African Americans came at the same time as the first Europeans. So, the question is why do people call a group that has been here as long as the first settlers "African," when they are just as American as the Europeans we call American or just white today, why the hyphenation, if that's the case George Bush is European-American.
In 1609 they came to the colonies as the first slaves.

The European explorers traveled to Africa, where they began a trans-Atlantic slave trade that would bring millions of Africans to the America.
I'm guessing it has to do with the fact that fried chicken is cheap and back in the day all black people in America were poor.
