Muslims worldwide observe this as a month of fasting. Fasting is wajib (obligatory) for adult Muslims, except those who are ill, travelling, pregnant, diabetic or going through menstrual bleeding.

Thus, according to the Quran, Muhammad first received revelations in the lunar month of Ramadan. Therefore, the month of Ramadan is considered to be the most sacred month of the Islamic calendar, the recording of which began with the Hijra [the migration or journey of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina between June 21st and July 2nd in 622 AD]

Muslims also increase restraint, such as abstaining from sexual relations and generally sinful speech and behavior during this month. It's like a reset button for Muslims who have lost their way and and a reminder to those who have corrupted themselves. Muslims are reminded of the blessings they have and give more in charity, the fasting itself is very beneficial and helps us re-calibrate our diet. One of the 7 deadly sins is Gluttony, over-consumption, with fasting we can manage our eating habits again. Also it is a commandment from God and is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. This month is very rewarding for Muslims.
