  1. 1940-1945 as a concentration camp.
  2. 1942-1945 as an extermination camp and complex of concentration camps.

The Holocaust mainly took Place in 1940-1945 but did start as early as 1934 but less than 5,000 people were killed between 1934-1940.

Here's how they did it:

  • Firstly Jews were told to report in to major towns or cites.
  • Secondly, if these towns or cities did not have ghettos of their own, they would either be told to go to a particular ghetto, or they would be transported.
  • Thirdly, people where sorted and selected for work, those unable to work would be unable to feed themselves.
  • Fourthly, during Operation Barbarossa many Jews would be sumarilly executed.
  • Lastly, People would be sent to camps, either to be worked to death, of be gassed upon arrival.

This is only a brief Description, see related question for more detail how the Holocaust Happened.
