Greetings, If you are speaking of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, he did not marry Anne (or as it is often presented, Ann) Child. Ann Child was the first wife of Benjamin's father, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin Franklin married Deborah Reed Rogers (actually, they set up as man and wife in the Common law fashion) in 1730. (Family Tree - http://fi.edu/franklin/family/famtree.html & Ben Timeline - http://fi.edu/franklin/timeline/timeline.html) Ann & Josiah were married in England and had 7 children. 3 in England and 4 in New England (Boston). Ann died of complications from her last birth. Then Josiah married Abiah Folger who then had 10 children more. Ben was the 10th son to Josiah (6th to Abiah) and the 15th child (out of 17) overall to Josiah. Ben was born in 1706 (Gregorian, 1705 in the Julian Calendar, which was in use at the time) I hope that helps In service, G.Robin Smith www.ben-franklin.org
In his letter, Franklin encourages a friend to marry. His friend should also favor "old women to young ones."
Deborah Read (February 14, 1708 - December 24, 1774) was the spouse of Benjamin Franklin, a prominent inventor, printer, thinker, and revolutionary.Franklin proposed to fifteen-year-old Read in 1724, but her mother would not consent to the marriage, citing Franklin's frequent trips to England and financial instability. While Franklin was away in search of a printing press in the Mother Country, Read married John Rogers, who fled to Barbados in 1725 to avoid debt. Read accepted another proposal from Franklin when he returned to the colonies two years later. Because the status of Rogers was unknown, they were not free to marry formally. Instead, they began a common-law marriage in 1730. They had two children together: Francis "Franky" Folger Franklin (1732 - November 21, 1736) died of smallpox at age four, and Sarah Franklin Bache, called Sally. Together they also raised William Franklin, Franklin's illegitimate son and future Colonial Governor of New Jersey.Deborah Read Franklin died of a stroke in 1774, while Benjamin was on an extended trip to England. She did not accompany him on his frequent trips to Europe due to a phobia of ocean travel. For the source and more detailed information concerning this issue, click on the related links section below.
