Often we would pass by Mr. Roberts house and he would be sitting on the porch in his overalls. He would call me over and ask about my father. He would sometimes ask me what I was doing in town and I would tell him about the movies. He would launch into Jesse James and Billy the Kid stories and he also claimed that he had made movies with Gene Autry. I always listened and was polite, but I thought he was just another old man telling stories for entertainment. A lot of that went on in Hico in that long ago time. My father knew a lot about Mr. Roberts' history and he tried to resist the stories that grew up when Mr. Roberts died, but people did not like to hear it, so he stopped. In my view, the whole think is "horse-hockey" as my father used to say. Mr. Roberts was a nice old man and so was Mrs. Roberts. She was always nice to me and my friends.
