Yes, it was the only way people traveled in those times.

Smith left Jamestown in the fall of 1609 for England to seek medical treatment. He was hurt when a bag of gunpowder that he had around his waist accidentally ignited and he suffered terrible burns.
Captain Smith sailed with the White Star Line for almost about 30 years. You're Welcome... Yo' Girl Kennedy a.k.a. BlAcK BaRbIe :-D
Smith was a scam artist who wrote a book after Pocahontas died in England. He lied about his relationship with her and was so hated by the men of Jamestown he had gunpowder sprinkled on him while he slept and set on fire. His burns were so bad that he had to return to England. Pocahontas real story is much more interesting. She was held as a captive for ransom by the colonists for 4 years. In this time she became a Christian and changed her name to Rebecca. John Rolfe is introduced to her and they marry. They sail to England, she has a baby boy, and dies soon after his birth. She is buried in England. It is about this time Smith writes his book and describes his relationship with her. It never existed and she was about 10 years old when he was in Jamestown.
Captain EJ Smith went to New York nine times on Olympic alone. He commanded 15 vessels in all which included the maiden voyages for Adriatic, Majestic, Baltic, Olympic, and Titanic. All the names of his vessels ended with a 'C' except Lizzie Fennel.

No. There were many premonitions, including the Vanderbilt family begging George Washington Vanderbilt II not to sail but nobody told Captain Smith any negative fears about the voyage.
