Ambrose Powell Hill was a West Point graduate and served briefly in the Mexican-American War. When news of the Civil War saw his home state of Virginia secede, Hill believed he would be eligible to be a general in the Confederate army. He was sadly mistaken and when he reported for duty at Harpers Ferry, he could only be commissioned as a colonel in the infantry. As the war moved along, Hill became an outstanding soldier. Although he began as a colonel, he ended his career as a Lieutenant General. In the closing days of the war, he was shot and killed.
