Confederate General Benjamin Hardin Helm graduated from in 1851. Among the 42 graduating class of cadets, Helm ranked ninth. He served in the Western Theater in the US Civil War. Helm participated in the battles of Shiloh, Vicksburg and Chickamauga. It was in the latter battle in 1863 that he was mortally wounded and died.As an aside, he was an in-law of President Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.
