What new weapon of war did Confederate General Gabriel James Rains invent?

Confederate General Gabriel James Rains was a member of the Confederate Torpedo Bureau. In 1864 he had invented a new weapon, a bomb, that if was invented earlier in the war would have caused much damage to Union shipping. The weapon was a small black explosive ball. It worked by having it tossed into a Union's ship coal department. When coal was shoveled into the ships boiler, the heat would cause a devastating explosion. From submarines, torpedoes and the first ironclad, the South seemed to pioneer new weapons of technology. The North seemed to react rather than create most of the war's innovations in weapons.
