Confederate General Henry Heth graduated from West point in 1847. Among the 38 graduating cadets in that year, Heth ranked 38th. Heth's division was among the first Confederate one to make contact with the Union on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Heth's division was the leading group of A. P. Hills lll Corps. Heth encountered 3,000 mounted Union infantry men and was forced to retreat.Additionally, Heth served at the battles of Chancellorsville and at the Siege of Petersburg. As an aside, Heth was a cousin of Confederate General George Pickett.
Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith was a graduate of West Point's class of 1845. He ranked 26th in his class.
Confederate General John Henry Winder graduated from West Point in 1820. He was ranked eleventh among the 30 cadets graduating that year. Winder's US Civil War service was for the most part, being in charge of POW camps.
Confederate General Francis Henry Gilmer graduated from West Point in 1839. He was ranked 4th in his graduating class of cadets that numbered 31. Gilmer saw most of his battle action in the Western Theater. His most noteworthy battles were at Shiloh and in the siege of Atlanta.
Confederate General Henry Brevard Davidson graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 33rd among his graduating class of cadets that numbered 52. Davidson saw action in the Western Theater of the US Civil ar. He served at the battle of Chickamauga and in the defense of Atlanta.
Confederate General Henry Harrison Walker graduated from West Point in 1853. He was ranked 41st among the 52 graduating cadets in his class. During the US Civil War, Harrison served in the Peninsula campaign commanded defenses in Richmond and served at the Battle of Gettysburg.
James Longstreet held the rank of major general in the Confederate army. He graduated 54th in the West Point class of 1842.
Confederate General George Edward Pickett graduated with the West point class of 1846. He ranked last in his class of 59 students.
Confederate General John C. Pemberton graduated from West point in the class of 1837. He ranked 27th in a class of 50 graduates.
General Philip Henry Sheridan graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 34th out of a class of 52.
Confederate General Lafayette McLaws graduated from West Point in 1842. He ranked 48th in his class of 56 cadets. He saw important action in the Battle of Antietam in 1862.
Confederate General Lloyd Tilghman graduated from West Point in 1836. Among the 49 cadets that graduated that year, General Tilghman ranked 46th. General Tilghman was killed at the Battle of Champion Hill in 1846 while directing a Confederate artillery battery.
Confederate General William Henry Talbot Walker graduated from West Point in 1837. Among the 50 graduating cadets in his class, Walker was ranked 46th. Walker saw important battle action in the Western Theater, including the battle of Chickamauga and in the Atlanta campaign. At the latter campaign, General Walker suffered a gunshot wound and was killed instantly. This was on July 22, 1864.
