Confederate General James Deshler graduated from West Point in 1854. Deshler was ranked seventh among the 45 cadets graduating that year. Deshler saw major Western Theater action in the US Civil War. He served at the small battles of Cheat Mountain, Camp Allegheny and Fort Hindman. His biggest battle was the Confederate victory at the Battle of Chickamauga. This turned out to be the South's greatest Western victory. James Deshler was killed at this battle in 1863.
