Confederate General Joseph Reid Anderson graduated from West Point in 1836. He was ranked fourth among his graduating class of cadets numbering 49. Anderson was first assigned to General AP Hill's division and was present during the Peninsula campaign. He later resigned to join the South's Ordinance Department. Anderson was also responsible for protecting the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond.As an aside, iron plates for the CSS Virginia were created at the Tredegar Iron Works.
