Confederate General William Montgomery Gardner graduated from West Point in 1846. He was ranked 58th in a graduating class of 59 cadets. Montgomery was a Mexican War veteran and in the US Civil War he fought at the First Battle of Bull Run. He was severely wounded there and when he returned from the hospital he saw service in the Eastern Theater, including to help defend Richmond.
Confederate General Franklin Gardner graduated from West Point in 1843. Thirty-nine cadets graduated that year and Franklin was ranked 17th. Franklin saw most of his US Civil War duty in the Western Theater. He led a brigade at the Battle of Shiloh and helped defend Vicksburg.
