It seems that by the 3rd century, the beginning of merging of the pagan Saturnalia celebration (in honor of the pagan god Saturn) into Christmas had begun. In addition to the Saturnalia, December 25 was also celebrated as the birth date of the pagan god Tammuz. Before long, the church could see that by importing this celebration into Christianity, they could gain large number of new members.
