As a young man he enlisted in the army under the name of Edgar Perry, but that was just given as a false name. Poe did not keep it after he left the aemy.

Edgar Allan Poe was born Edgar Poe on January 19, 1809. After being abandoned by his father and orphaned by his mother, he was taken in by John and Frances Allan, who became his foster parents. They added the middle name "Allan" to his name. So, he did not formally change his name; it was given to him by his foster family.

John Allan's actions are the most likely reason Poe was in financial trouble at the time he left the Allan's home because he did not give Poe enough money to finish the year at the University of Virginia. Allan's will did not leave anything from his estate (valued at more than $2 million corrected for inflation) for Poe even though he left some for his illegitimate children. Of the few times Poe did use his full middle name, many were in letters to Allan asking for money.
