The peak of Britains dominance of world affairs was probably between 1900 & WW1, (just don't tell the Boers that!) The Royal Navy was powered by coal & the Industrial Revoution, happening in Britain as & when it did empowered Britain in a way which no other country matched. It provided Britain with the basis of a disproportionate role in the modern world. (& perhaps the sooner we British recognise those days are long behind us the better off we will be....)
