The economy of Southern Europe is one of the largest economies in all of Europe. It is more agriculturally based than the other regions of Europe, especially in the southeastern portion. However, there are very large industrial based economics in Southern Europe as well, mostly in Italy and Spain.
Economies of most, but not all, cultures are based on some type of currency (money). Economies could also be based on barter, gold, etc.
Many societies in developing countries are currently in a transition phase from agrarian to industrial economies. Countries such as India, China, and various African nations are experiencing rapid industrialization and urbanization as they shift from agricultural-based economies to manufacturing and service-based industries.

Slavery during the colonial time was profitable for both the northern and southern colonies. However, southern economies depended so steeply on the agricultural goods produced in vast quantities. The north on the other hand were primarily based on commercial economies which heavily relied on their numerous ports which required less slave labor.
There are several countries that have a market based economies. France and England are two countries that have this type of economy.

Countries with little industry are often referred to as "developing countries" or "less industrialized countries." These nations typically have economies that rely more heavily on agriculture or natural resource extraction rather than manufacturing or technology-based industries.
