The "Long Walk" started in the beginning of spring in 1864.
However, they were not marched to a reservation but to more of an internment camp or POW camp for four years called Bosque Redondo or Fort Sumner or in Navajo, Hwéeldi, in De Baca county, it was 40 square miles. In 1868, due largely to the scandal of the poor conditions and corruption the Navajo were allowed to leave. They were supposed to be sent to a reservation in Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. The Navajo leaders refused and key people in government who had come to sympathize with them agreed and they were allowed to a reservation in the middle of their traditional lands that ultimately was 27,000 square miles.
