The African Kingdom of Dahomey was defeated by the French and made a French protectorate in 1894. Then in 1904 the area became part of the French colony of French Dahomey. When French Dahomey became independent 1958, it took the name of Benin.

The British never colonized the Republic of Guinea. You might be thinking of Papua New Guinea, which was colonized by the British in 1883.
