In 1932, a bust of George Washington replaced the Liberty Standing design of the US quarter (which was used from 1916 to 1930).

No US quarters were minted in 1933, and the Washington image was used from 1934 to date. The design was intended to be a one-year commemorative in honor of the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth, but proved to be so popular that it was made permanent.
