Google Earth was first released as Google Earth 3.0 on June 28, 2005.

Previously it was known as the Keyhole Earthviewer (created in June 2001), which became the basis for Google Earth after Google acquired Keyhole in Oct 2004.

Released in 2005, this free downloadable map software is intended for personal, home use. A free app for smart phones became available in October 2008. A professional (not free) version is meant for commercial use, has more functions, and there is a yearly fee.

Google Earth has been around since 2005. Google released Google Earth v3.0 as the first public version of the product. Prior to that it was a product called Keyhole Earthviewer.
