Hinduism is known as one of the prehistoric religions because its practice can be traced back to before recorded history. Evidence of the practice of Hinduism has been dated back before 5000 BC.

Beginning of Hinduism:

1. The four modes of time of Hinduism:

Hinduism has four classes of people and each of them use a different mode of time.

1. Brahmanas use eternal mode

2. Kshatriyas use natural or semi permanent mode

3. Vaishyas use conditional mode

4. Shudras use Temporary mode

Thus, according to Brahmanas Hinduism is an eternal religion. According to Shudras it is a temporary religion. Thus, the age of Hinduism can never be determined.

2. Hinduism and Atheism:

Adding to the confusion is the fact that Hinduism is indistinguishable and inseparable from Atheism. Since Atheism is older than any religion Hinduism too would appear to begin at the dawn of civilization.

3. The place of origin of Hinduism:

The Hinduism of Brahmanas is universal and that of the Shudras local. This makes the place of origin also very confusing. Without knowing where it started first it would be extremely difficult to say when it started.

Thus, the estimation of the age of Hinduism is a futile exercise. However, the perfection and maturity of Hinduism indicate that it is undoubtedly the oldest religion.
