James Ruse was a British Convict who was caught stealing 2 silver watches and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia, after a year of being in Australia his sentence had expired and he applied for a land grant from governor Phillipa which was given along with the promise to give extra land and supplies if he was able to sustain him and his family as a farmer. He succesfully achieved this but his harvest was not enough for the colony but provided enough seed for a succesfull harvest next season. He contributed to early Australia by increasing self sustainability among the colony and was known as the first ex-convict in Australia to seek a grant, and produce a successful harvest.
