I think you are missing the point. The war was for southern independence. It was not a true civil war where 2 or more factions fight to control 1 government. The south wanted it's own country.

Jefferson Davis was important in the battle at Fort Sumter. He sent officers to the fort to ask the union army to surrender the fort in April 1861. He was born in Kentucky and was elected president of the Confederacy. Bombed Fort Sumter.

On April 3, 1863, working class women in Richmond, Virginia staged a protest at the home of Jefferson Davis. Their protest was over the lack of food in Richmond. Davis met with them but could only ask for their patience. When the women did not disperse, Davis threatened to use force. Slowly the women retreated from the area.
On Apr.10,1861 the Confederate Secretary of War, Walker, telegraphed to Gen. Beauregard to ask for the surrendering of the Fort. The request was handed over to Major Anderson, commander of the fort, in the late afternoon of the 11th. The request was repealed at 3,15 AM of 12th. At 4,15 AM of the same day the Confederates opened fire on fort Sumter.
