In response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979, President Jimmy Carter implemented a series of measures aimed at countering Soviet expansionism. He announced a boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics and increased military aid to Afghan resistance fighters, known as the Mujahideen. Carter also emphasized the importance of the Carter Doctrine, which stated that the U.S. would use military force to protect its interests in the Persian Gulf region. Additionally, he implemented economic sanctions against the Soviet Union.

The United States initiated a boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games because the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan caused Jimmy Carter to retaliate. Along with the boycott, he also issued a grain and info technology embargo.

The 52 American hostages, originally detained on November 4, 1979, were released to the United States on January 20, 1981. The release was announced just moments after the newly elected President, Ronald Reagan, took his official oath of office. It is not known whether the Iranians intentionally delayed the negotiations until Carter left office.
