The Reverend John Hancock (born June 1st, 1702), father of the American patriot and signer of the Declaration of Independence, died on May 7th, 1744, after a short illness, and only a few weeks before his 42nd birthday. His son John Hancock was seven years old.
John Hancock was then raised by his twice-widowed mother, Mary (Hawke Thaxter) Hancock, for a short period of time. A wealthy uncle took an interest in the young boy and adopted him as his own.
