He was an able seaman and a qualified cartographer but in truth he never set foot on the New Hampshire Colony. The patent for what is now New Hampshire was part of a larger grant that he shared with Sir Ferdinando Gorges. They divided it along the Piscataqua River and Gorges got Maine and Mason got New Hampshire. Mason sent David Thompson and his party ahead to establish a fishing village while he prepared other groups of colonists for the journey. He died before the group he was to lead could leave England.
