King George IV was on the throne before King William IV.
William IV, reigned 1830-1837. He was one of Victoria's uncles.
Adelaide was the wife of King William IV. He was king she was his queen consort, so she was not "on the throne". She was queen only because she married William. By the way, it is the British throne not the English throne.
King William III ruled England starting in 1689. He died in 1702 and was replaced on the Throne of England by his son John William Friso, or William IV.

George III (1738-1820) was succeeded by his eldest son George IV (1762-1830). Since George IV had no surviving children the throne passed to his younger brother, the third son of George III, William IV (1765-1837). George III's second son died before he inherited the throne. He was Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827).
The successor of George IV was his brother, William IV, who ascended to the throne after George IV's death in 1830. William IV reigned until 1837, and his reign was marked by significant reforms, including the abolition of slavery in the British Empire and the extension of voting rights through the Reform Act of 1832. William IV was known as the "Sailor King" due to his earlier naval career.

During Charles Dickens' lifetime, the two kings of England were King George IV and King William IV, and the queen was Queen Victoria. Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, the year of Dickens' first novel publication.
Frederick William IV refused the German throne, which had been offered to him by the Frankfurt Parliament on Oct.3,1849 because : "He would not accept a crown from the gutter"
