The Spanish king driven from the throne by Napoleon Bonaparte was Ferdinand VII. He was captured during the Peninsular War and later returned to Spain in 1814. Ferdinand attempted to reassert control over Spain's Latin American colonies, but his efforts were largely unsuccessful due to the growing independence movements in the region.
Napoleon manipulated the Spanish king off the throne, the Peninsular War broke out in 1807. Portugal refused to join the Continental System and Napoleon invaded the small Iberian country, forcing it to comply.
