The "claiming of Louisiana" did not happen during a particular year in history. La Salle's first years in North America were actually spent in the region that we now know as French Canada. But his real passion was to discover the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and to claim the whole Mississippi Basin for France. (This river basin actually covers roughly 1/2 of what we know as the Continental United States today.) In service to King Louis XIV, La Salle spent two decades of his life establishing a French presence in the region, slowly but surely establishing good relations with the Native American tribes that he met along the route, and building a series of outposts as he went. His initial trip down the Ohio River to the Mississippi was in 1669. He continued his mission for the King until his death in 1687.

The Louisiana Territory changed hands a number of times before the United States bought it for $15,000,000 in 1803 from the French.
