Laura's last book, These Happy Golden Years, was published in 1943.

Laura wrote a follow-up, The First Four Years, which was published in 1970, thirteen years after Laura's death, and two years after Rose died. It is heartbreaking reading. The years after Almanzo and Laura were married were marked by one tragedy after another: they lost their baby son; a house fire destroyed everything they had, drought and grasshoppers killed their crops; and diphtheria nearly killed them both, leaving Almanzo partially paralyzed.

Evidently, Rose did not have the heart or patience or strength to edit her mother's last manuscript, and it was Rose's heir, Roger Lea McBride, who had it published after Rose's death.

On The Way Home is a diary written in 1894 by Laura on the trip she, Almanzo and Rose made to the Ozarks, where they settled in Mansfield, Missouri. Rose wrote the introduction and afterword. It was published in 1962.

Laura Ingalls Wilder stopped writing in 1943 when she completed her final book, "These Happy Golden Years," which is part of her "Little House" series. After that, she focused on promoting her books and engaging with her readers.

She "officially" stopped writing in 1943, with the publication of "These Happy Golden Years". Sometime after that, she wrote a rough first draft called "The First Four Years", but laid it aside and never returned to it for unknown reasons. Her daughter, Rose, also elected to do nothing with it. Rose's heir, Roger Lee MacBride, decided to publish "The First Four Years" as originally written, which is why it does not have the polish of the earlier books.

Are there any living Ingalls relatives today?

Yes, The Ingalls family is still alive and well. I know this because I am a member of The Ingalls family by blood. My mother, Vickie (Ingalls) Xavier, is an Ingalls woman by blood and birth. I really wish people would stop telling the lies that my family is dead and gone from history. That's absolutely absurd and untrue. If it were true, I would not exist. While I am unable to have children, both of my sisters have children....one of my nephews has 2 of his own now..... My uncle, mom's brother, Larry Ingalls, is a grandfather and soon to be a great grandfather. So, as you see, and I have told you so, we, THE INGALLS FAMILY, are alive and well. Sean Hughes

What did Laura inglalls wilder do after she was famous or did she die and had to stop writing?

She became famous later in life and wrote up to about the time of her husband's death. It is assumed that The First Four Years was the book she was working on at the time of his death and that she lost interest in completing it and that is why it is not laid out in the same format as her previous books. She was 82 years old at that time (her husband's passing) . She herself died 8 years later.
