He was at the gold camps during the CA gold rush in the 1850's and saw that the miners were having a hard time with the seams in the pants they were wearing because of the dirt and water they were using to find gold, so he made a pair of pants using brads at the seams. The miners loved them and bought them. The rest is history. By-the-way in the 1490's sailors were all ready wearing a denim type material as the material for their clothing on ship because it wore well.
