Magellan's ships entered the strait on November 1, 1520, but he was not the first to discover it. See Accounts Before Magellan
he led the first expedition to sail completely around the world, although he did not live to complete the voyage. he became the first European to sail across what he named the Pacific Ocean. he was killed in battle but one of his ships completed the first circumnavigation of the world.

He wanted to know the western route to the Indies.
Ferdinand Magellan
Magellan didn't make it. He died in the Philippines but 18 of his men did make it back.
You can ask 'who' was he like, or 'what' was he like, but 'how' was he like doesn't make any sense.
