Nelson Mandela was arrested and jailed in 1962 for conspiracy to overthrow the state. He was given a life sentence. He served 27 years of that sentence in Pollsmoor Prison, Victor Verster Prison and on Robben Island. He was released from Victor Verster Prison on February 11, 1990.
