The U.S. Government passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act on July 17, 1984. This did not change the drinking age. However, it forced the individual states to establish the minimum drinking age as 21 or lose 10% of their federal highway funding. The minimum drinking age is 21 in all 50 U.S. states.

The minimum drinking age in Massachusetts was 21 in 1969. In 1973 Massachusetts lowered the minimum drinking age from 21 to 18. It was then raised from 18 to 20 in 1979 and raised again to 21 in 1985. The minimum drinking age in Massachusetts still is 21.
