Requiring parents to teach the children to read and learn The Bible.When Massachusetts Bay Colony was first started, most of its citizens were devout Puritans. The Puritans believed that the Bible was the word of God, and therefore, to understand it, one must be properly educated. As well, they believed in writing about their experiences in order to reflect upon themselves and their lifestyle. In order to properly read and write, one must obtain a sufficient education. As a result, Harvard was formed in Massachusetts as the first college in America, and many colleges were shortly formed afterwards to educate people in the literary arts.
