Matthew Flinders's first seafaring expedition was when he accompanied William Bligh on his second voyage to Tahiti in 1791. He was 17 at the time, and had only been in the Royal Navy for 2 years. His first journey for the purposes of exploration was in 1796 when, accompanied by George Bass, Flinders first explored botany Bay and the coastline south of Sydney in an 8-foot open boat, the Tom Thumb.
