The first concept of the Lancer Evolution X was revealed in 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show. It was then named the Concept-X, as it was still in the early stages. Mitsubishi followed this in 2007 with the unveiling of the Prototype-X at the North American International Auto Show. It first went on sale in Japan on the 1st of October, 2007.

The 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer was produced with one of two engine types. First is the 4G94 engine, used in the ES, LS, and OZ Rally models. The 4G94 is a SOHC 2.0-liter, 4 cylinder engine. The other engine type is the 4G63T, used in the Evolution sub-model. The 4G63T is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4 cylinder engine.
