The Morant Bay rebellion of 1865 was caused by the conditions in which ex-slaves lived. There were food shortage, crown land laid idle while the people had no land for farming as they would be prosecuted if they trespass in these land. No Job or proper health care, no schools were provided. Governor Eyre ruled with a iron fist paid no attention to the needs of the people. Letters were sent to England to the Queen who was advised that the allegations where not true. She in-turn responded that the ex-slaves should work harder, when news had back to the people of Morant Bay they felt that England did not care for the situation that is what started the rebellion.

The first major event of the Morant Bay rebellion was a fight between the local police and the black spectators of a heated trial of a black man who was accused of trespassing an abandoned plantation that broke out on October 7, 1865. Arrests were issued, most notably that of Baptist preacher Paul Bogle. On October 11, Randall Brown arrived at the Morant Bay court house with protestors, who then proceeded to throw rocks and sticks at the volunteer militia stationed there. The militia killed seven of the black protestors in retaliation. Governor John Eyre then sent government troops to hunt down the rebels and bring Paul Bogle to trial. The Morant Bay rebellion proved to be the kindle to a very heated and fierce debate in Britain. Shortly after, Jamaica was turned into a Crown Colony.
