To add more information here, it seems most historians cite 1446 as the year Portugal first made a settlement in what is now called Guinea-Bissau. There were conflicts between France and Portugal over this section of Africa and it can be safely said that by the middle of the 19th century, Portugal had consolidated its overall control of this territory.
