The school children of the state were polled in 1897 and chose the Violet as the state flower. This was announced on Arbor Day, 1897. However, this was not made official until an act of the state legislature on March 11, 1968. On July 31, 2001, the state officially changed the species of Violet from the "early blue violet", viola palmata, to the "common blue violet", viola sororia.
