In a nutshell, there were # larger countries, now provinces of the country, each lead by a different ruler. In 1859, two of them (Wallachia = Muntenia and Moldavia) got united under the rule of the same prince, later replaced by a king brought over from a German aristocratic family. In 1918, at the end of the War, all the remaining Romanian provinces were given the occasion to choose their status and they all decided to unite with Romania, forming the "Greater Romania".

Romania as we know it today, is the product of 1900 years of history.

To begin with, this land was first inhabited by the Thracian in the 5th century BC, then by the Geto-Dacians in the 2nd century BC, and finally, in the 1st century AC, it was conquered by the Romans. This is considered the begginigs, due to the fact that the Latins have left a legacy that is still found in 60% of Romanian language, culture and typology.

Between that time and the 9th century, few details are available, except for sporadic mentions of in-habitation of the land. In the 14th century, we know that the southern part of Romania was ruled by Basarab, the northwestern by 3 voievods and the east by Dragoş. They are the first Romanian rulers.

Then, until the 17th century, was a period of unrest, many wars with the Turks, the Hungarians, the Polish, the Russians, etc. In 1599 the first union of Romanian lands was done by Mihai the Brave, but it only went on for 1 year.

In 1848 was another attempt, but this only united the south and the east. The north remained under Hungarian occupation until the WW I, when Romania, on the 1st December, 1918, was unified as the country we know today!

So , nowadays Romania has been a country for 90 years.
