They never actually became true allies. Russia never declared the U.S. as an ally, only Great Britain and France. But after the events at Pearl Harbour (7th December 1941) the U.S. joined the war on the British side. Russia even started of against Britain, signing a 'no-contact' agreement with Hitler.
