Thailand is currently considering a canal across the the Isthmus of Kra, which if built, would effectively end the mainstream usage of the Moluccas Strait since it would be a more direct route around Southeast Asia.

The French no longer have colonies in southeast Asia. At one time, before WW2 and the Japanese pushed them out, they had colonies in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. When they attempted to reestablish them at the end of the war, they were again sent packing and left the US holding the bag, hence a couple decades of the Vietnam conflict.
SEATO means South East Asia Treaty Organization and is Asia's counterpart to Europe's NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organizaton). North & South Vietnam were divided by an agreement between the Free World and the Communist World in 1954, at the end of the French Indo-China War (also referred to as the First Indo-China War). The "Paris Peace Accord" signed in 1973, ended the US involvement in the Vietnam War.
