He lived from 2nd April 1842 to 9th March 1857, when he died of pleurisy at the age of only 14.

At the time of his death he was studying to be a Catholic priest, and his tutor, John Bosco, had a very high regard for his kindness, virtuosity and human qualities. He wrote a biography of him, The Life of Dominic Savio, which is seen as having been one of the main influences in his canonisation. He was made a Saint by Pope Pius XII in 1954, and is the youngest non-Martyred saint of the Catholic Church.
